The Issue

Football is known and loved for its intensity, energy, and continuous flow. For generations, the game has been built around two uninterrupted halves where momentum, passion, and skill take center stage. However, the increasing use of hydration breaks is beginning to change that experience.

Hydration breaks were originally introduced to protect players during extreme heat and dangerous playing conditions. In those circumstances, they are an important and necessary measure. However, these breaks are now being used more frequently, even in conditions that do not appear to justify them. As a result, the natural rhythm of matches is being interrupted, affecting both the players on the pitch and the fans in the stands and at home.

Many supporters are concerned that these stoppages are becoming opportunities for additional advertising and commercial revenue rather than being used solely for player welfare. Football is not basketball or American football. One of the sport's greatest strengths is its continuous action and limited interruptions, and that should be protected.

This is not a call to remove hydration breaks entirely. Player safety must always come first. Rather, we believe they should only be implemented when weather conditions genuinely require them, based on a clear and transparent temperature threshold or other extreme environmental factors.

We call upon FIFA and football's governing bodies to review the current use of hydration breaks and ensure they are applied only when truly necessary. By doing so, they can continue to protect players while preserving the flow, integrity, and spirit of the beautiful game.

Support this petition if you believe football should remain focused on the players, the fans, and the game itself—not unnecessary interruptions.
