Limit Airbnb Leasing in Residential Buildings in Jersey City ( City Line)
The Issue
As a resident living alone in a City Line apartment building in Jersey City, I've started to feel increasingly uncomfortable and unsafe. The leasing of numerous Airbnb units in our building and the nearby sister building has resulted in a constant flow of unknown faces and a number of incidents resulting in police activity. With the discontinuation of our 24-hour concierge service, proper screening of these outsiders is virtually nonexistent. The situation is further compounded by the fact that we are still obliged to fulfill high rental fees that persistently rise each year, even as our amenities are slowly taken away or restricted.
This issue isn't exclusive to our buildings. According to a study by Inside Airbnb, in the past few years, there has been a 75% increase in Airbnb listings in residential areas in Jersey City, which implies that many other building inhabitants are likely undergoing similar anxiety.
Therefore, we are calling upon the Jersey City Mayor's office and the city council to impose further restrictions on Airbnb leasing in our residential buildings and to better manage the delivery of safety and security measures. By doing so, we can foster a safer community for both the residents currently living in this situation, and for those in the future. We implore all locals who relate to these concerns, to stand in solidarity with us and sign this petition.
