It is doubtful stargazers are pleased, nor anyone else well-informed of the reality of the situation. It's more a matter of accepting compromise - and there's still the risk the NZTA won't approve of 3000K LED street lights. Although less offensive than the first 4000K LED lights trialled, Dunedin could do so much better.
If only the NZTA acknowledged the negative impact and inherent flaws of current LED street lights, decision makers were fully aware of the hazards, and councils in NZ were not under pressure, there would be time to adequately explore safer, more effective options and make a more educated decision.
Considering all the obstacles in the way to responsible lighting, 3000K LEDs were the least awful choice available. What a shame...
