Liberal Democrats' Association with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community
The Issue
Liberal Democrats in the UK have been increasingly associating with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, causing unease and alienation among many British Muslims. Leader Ed Davey recently spoke at a Community event at Fazl Mosque, London, a venue usually closed to outsiders.
This group only has an estimated 30,000 members in the UK (The Economist, 2016), a small part of the 3.9 million Muslims in the country (ONS, 2021).
Unfortunately, it restricts its members from attending mainstream Muslim mosques and events, fostering division and intolerance.
Moreover, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community requires members to seek special permission from their Caliph to marry outside of it, whether that marriage is with a Muslim or otherwise.
Working members are "required to contribute 1/16th of one’s income from all sources after taxes" for internal operations (whyahmadi.org, 2024). Members who choose to leave the group are shunned along with their families, even if the latter remain committed.
Given this outlook, we, the undersigned, call upon all Liberal Democrats to reconsider their affiliation with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, and we urge them to stand with the broader, inclusive spirit of Islam that allows for freedom in faith, finance and marriage. Please sign this petition to take a step towards unity and fairness in our political and religious landscape.
