Dear friends of Sea-Eye,
in the few weeks of the year, 471 people have already died or went missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean.
The number of unreported cases is likely much higher. 471 people with dreams, fears, loved ones - and the hope of finding safety and humane living conditions in Europe.

Every single death of these people seeking protection could have been prevented – if the EU states had finally fulfilled their responsibility and created safe passages!
As long as this is not the case, we will do everything we can to save people in distress at sea from drowning. However, the Italian government has taken it upon itself to actively hinder the work of civil sea rescuers and so our ship remains in the harbor in Italy - unlawfully detained.
For us it is clear: we are taking legal action! A lawsuit has been filed. It is now more important than ever to put up resistance.
The detention also presents us with a financial challenge: on the one hand, the running costs for the SEA-EYE 4 have to be covered - this includes insurance and the salaries of the professional sea crew. On the other hand, the legal proceedings will result in additional costs of around 3000 euros. On top of this, a further 2000 euros in harbour fees will be incurred as a result of the detention.

The court-ordered, premature release of ships from other sea rescue organisations has clearly shown that the detention of civil rescue ships is unlawful and that a lawsuit can successfully shorten the blockade.
We will never tire of emphasising that every single rescue ship is urgently needed and we very much hope that we can send the SEA-EYE 4 back into the area of operation as quickly as possible with your help!
