LGBT+ refugees in Kakuma refugee camp are not safe

The Issue

We are asking for your support regarding the ongoing, serious human rights abuses committed by the Kenyan Police and UNHCR against LGBT+ refugees in Kakuma Refugee camp, Kenya. Action is urgently needed to stop the brutalization and criminalization.

As LGBT+ refugees they don't only face the struggles of being refugees, but also being LGBT+. For example :

The Kenyan police targets LGBT+ people, fabricates reasons to arrest them to then demand high bailouts.
Those who are arrested are tortured and many of them are never seen again if they are unable to pay.

This has been going on for years but has recently intensified. LGBT+ refugees have begged UNHCR to move them to a safer area but nothing has happened. Multiple people have died, including a young child, Patricia. She was exposed to tear gas used by the police.

Trinidad, whose lack of medical care led to her death after an arson attack. This happened under UNHCR watch.

THE PROBLEMS WITH MEDICAL CARE.

LGBT+ refugees are also discriminated against in the UNHCR (IRC) hospitals like clinics 7,6 and 5. It's common with injuries, sometimes very serious ones, during homo/transphobic attacks. But once they are taken to IRC they get little to none medical attention and this led to the death of one of our members (Trinidad) who got burnt and taken to IRC hospital for treatment but she lost life due to poor care and treatment. Many Up To date have injuries, wounds and scars and they haven't got helped.THIS MEANS

LGBT+ refugees are treated differently, unfairly and badly this made us to risk for developing stress- related disorders such as anxiety and depression,

We demand protection.

We demand immediate evacuation.

We demand that all LGBT+ people are recognized as refugees instead of asylum seekers by DCR.

It is UNHCR's responsibility to protect these people, yet LGBT+ refugees are being beaten, raped, killed and medically neglected. This is not protection, this is violation against The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
