Hello all,
Sorry for the delayed response but things have been very busy here as of late.
We're at over 11,000 supporters since the last update and I keep seeing daily notifications of more signatures coming in.
I never heard anything from LG - not even a single response to emails other than out of office emails. I have physically mailed various LG offices so I will keep this updated with any responses.
The 2017 TV ranges are launching and have been reviewed and aren't significantly brighter than the 2016 LG B6 OLED range so the removal of the 3D filter hasn't made a huge difference. In fact most say if you have a 2016 OLED there's not really any point in upgrading this year - 2018 will bring bigger changes like HDMI 2.1 and High Frame Rate support.
Talking of HFR I've tested the LG E6 with the UHD HFR 100fps demo being broadcast on satellite on 19.2e today and the E6 seems to handle it fine both via the builtin DVB-S2 tuner and the media player. A nice bonus for sure!
I've seen lots of comments regarding people still buying the 2016 OLED TVs with 3D support as they are disappointed with the 2017 models and almost everyone who tries 3D on the OLED for the first time is amazed and the common consensus is why did they drop support when they finally got it to this level of excellence.
It does sound like the 2017 models have had improvements elsewhere but the incoming 4.31.xx firmware range sounds like it improves motion handling on the 2016 sets and potentially we may see better black handling although that is just speculation for now.
I have attached a photo to this update from a local UK supermarket Blu-ray section and you can see there are a few 3D films all outselling their Ultra HD versions. Ultra HD is still new and niche but this does show there is still a market for 3D disks when people can play them.
Cinema wise I saw Guardians of the Galaxy 2 recently which was great in 3D and yesterday I saw Alien: Covenant in 2D and some of the effects did seem as though they had initially been made with 3D in mind (ie the facehuggers jumping straight at the camera)!
I'll send another update out as soon as I have any updates to add.
Best regards,
Aidan
