Petition update

Great news - but we still need your help!

London, United Kingdom

Sep 6, 2016 — Morning,

Well, it’s been a remarkable 24 hours – and it’s all down to you.

Nearly 23,000 have now signed the online petition. Even Gary Lineker tweeted his support last night. Not sure if he did it in his underwear good on you Gary!

Then something amazing happened.

Last night the Labour Group of Lewisham Councillors – the backbenchers of the council – met to discuss the CPOs with the Council’s Chief Executive Barry Quirke.

After the discussion, the Labour Group voted overwhelmingly in favour of a motion calling on their own Labour Mayor and Cabinet to STOP the CPOs.

You can read about it here.

That doesn’t mean its over.

The Mayor and Cabinet will still vote this Wednesday evening. And the odds are still stacked against us.

But it does mean your support, your emails and tweets are working.

So with just one day to go, please email or tweet the Lewisham Cabinet members who will decide the fate of Millwall, the Millwall Community Trust, residents and local businesses.

Please send a respectful email or tweet highlighting your objections to the CPO to the Mayor and Cabinet members.

They will decide on Wednesday and your voice could make the difference.

If you wish to contact the local MPs they are:

Neil Coyle MP (Bermondsey and Old Southwark) neil.coyle.mp@parliament.uk

Both Neil and Vicky back our campaign but are still keen to hear your views.

Milllwall's Chairman John Berylson has now written to Mayor of London Sadiq Khan asking him to make a last minute intervention.

The letter is copied below. If you'd like to email Sadiq, his email is mayor@london.gov.uk and you can tweet him at @MayorofLondon and @SadiqKhan

Once again, thanks for all your help and support.

Now let’s bloody well win this!

Defend Our Den and Millwall FC’s Fan On The Board

John Berylson's letter to Mayor of London Sadiq Khan

Dear Mr Khan,
Firstly may I congratulate you on becoming Mayor of London. Your predecessor visited The Den in January 2015 to see the great work the Millwall Community Trust has done at the Lions Centre with thousands of young people across Lewisham and Southwark.
He was greatly impressed by the trust, which receives funding from MOPAC, and last year generated more than £7m in cost savings to society - with the biggest impact on substance abuse, crime, education, health, behaviour and bringing young people out of NEET status.
I hope you’ll also be able to visit the scheme in the future. But this week I fear Lewisham Council will make a decision that will not only threaten the MCT’s future, but also that of Millwall FC.
This Wednesday, Lewisham’s Mayor and Cabinet will vote on whether to grant compulsory purchase powers to take land around The Den currently leased to Millwall and the MCT’s Lions Centre, and hand it to property developer Renewal, whose parent companies are registered offshore.
This won’t just affect Millwall and the MCT. Local businesses and residents also face this threat. One woman, a talented sculptress, has been offered a tenth of the market rate by Renewal for her home.
This is in spite of us offering to develop the land ourselves to create 400 residential properties, new homes for the MCT and the threatened local businesses and share the profits with the Council, within the planned Renewal New Bermondsey development.
Sadly Renewal continues to refuse to work with us and the Council won’t consider our offer.
So at this late stage, we would welcome your intervention to convince the Council to hold off on this costly CPO process, which could delay the much needed regeneration for up to two years and get them to consider our plans.
I have attached the letter I have sent to members of Lewisham’s Cabinet.
I hope you can join the more than 22,000 who have already signed the Defend Our Den petition in calling on Lewisham to call off the CPOs and work with Millwall to find a solution that benefits us all.
Kind regards,

John Berylson
Chairman Millwall FC
