The Matsu School District just passed a bill on June 15th banning transgender athletes from woman’s sports. There have been many studies showing that trans athletes have no real advantage in sports, (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5357259/  is one example) and as someone who has many trans friends, including those interested in sports, and someone who has seen the affects of trans-exclusionary policies on the mental, and even physical health of trans youth, I believe this bill has the capability of causing real damage to the well-being of LGBTQ+ students. If this bill isn’t changed,  I believe the Self-Harm and Suicide rate of LGBTQ+ students will rise significantly, especially considering that the passing of this bill will open up the door to more anti-LGBTQ+ bills in the future. Sports, for some people, are a main coping mechanism, and something that brings many people joy, and taking that away from anyone will cause horrible damage to their mental health.
