This year a lot of enthusiasm has been shown by Ganpati pandals and household Ganpati decorations for saving the Aarey forest. Jhanvi Rokde of Pratiksha Nagar has designed a theme of ‘Save Aarey’ for her home’s Ganpati decoration.

Ganpati pandals seem to be taking the responsibility of the courts as conscience keepers of our society. The lawsuit contesting the removal of trees from Mumbai's Aarey Colony for the metro car shed was heard by the Supreme Court on 30th July. The judgement regarding the plea to stop the construction of the Metro car shed had been postponed to the next hearing on 5th August which was again postponed to 30th August which again got postponed to 28th September. The delay in announcing a concrete action regarding the construction of a metro car shed in Aarey is indirectly favoring the decision to cut the trees and destroy the forest. The matters concerning protecting the forests and environment need urgent and immediate attention as these resources are heading towards extinction and exploitation. Aarey forest is the only surviving urban forest in the world which needs protection from encroachments and commercialization. If the state fails to do its duty to protect the natural forests and biodiversity, the apex courts must come to the rescue and protect the environment.
