EDIT: a bit of an update. Recently the Arts Centre Trust Board has announced that the Dux will never be saved. They are in favour of a new tennant. I don't think the board or the director have a clue what the people of Christchurch want and the value we place on returning this to its former glory as the Dux De Lux! There has never been a more pertinent time to sign and share this petition!

The Arts centre trust board recently rejected a plan to restore and re-open the famous Dux de Lux restaurant and bar in the Christchurch Arts Centre. The Dux holds a special place in the hearts of many Cantabrians, both past and present, not to mention the countless musicians, many of whom got their first live experience on the Dux stage. It was originally the Canterbury students union back when the arts centre was the University of Canterbury but in 1978 became the Dux and grew to include a microbrewery, a vegetarian and seafood restaurant, an outstanding beer garden and a legendary live music venue. It has been a part of the very fabric of what it means to be a Cantabrian for almost as long as the city has been here. It is a drawcard for the Arts centre, breathing life into the entire precinct, something that has been lost and struggles to regain since the earthquakes. Richard Sinke and his team at REDUX are ready to go, and have even offered to raise the funds to get the restoration done. All they asked in return was free rent for 50 years to raise the funds to pay for their efforts. A pretty good deal if you consider that the Arts centre trust has no plans, nor the funds to restore the building. This means we will likely see the this gem languishing for another 10 years. Let's show the Arts centre trust just how much we loved the Dux and hope they see sense!
