Let's Require Detroit City Officials to Support Our Charter

Let's Require Detroit City Officials to Support Our Charter
The Issue
Did you know that Detroit City Officials are NOT required to take an Oath of Office to support the Charter of the City of Detroit?
🤯
The signers of this petition want to CHANGE this - we want to REQUIRE elected and appointed City Officials to take an Oath of Office to support our City Charter!
This is the current Oath of Office for Detroit City Officials: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this state and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of office to the best of my ability."
We would like the City Clerk to amend the Oath of Office to read: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support THIS CHARTER OF THE CITY OF DETROIT AND the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this state and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of office to the best of my ability."
This is a pretty simple and easy update to Section 2-103 that reinforces introductory Charter language, which states that the People of Detroit "have the right to expect all City Officials, elected or appointed, will be held accountable to fulfill the intent of the Charter."
In addition to ensuring accountability, this update will also encourage transparency and reduce likelihood of fraud, waste, corruption, and abuse.
For example, from 2020-2025, if City Officials had been required to support the Charter, then it is likely that the millions of dollars of taxpayer money and ARPA grants spent to DEMOLISH and DISMANTLE our City's resources, properties, and buildings and to ENCROACH on our City's parks, open spaces, amenities, communities, and neighborhoods - in direct violation of our City Charter - would have been better used to IMPROVE and MODERNIZE our resources and RE-ESTABLISH and RESTART our important health, life safety, and "quality-of-life" needs, instead.
We only need TWO of the nine Council Members to bring this issue in front of Council, and we only need SIX members to agree, in order to have the City Clerk amend the Oath of Office.
++++ Unfortunately, ZERO Detroit City Council Members have agreed to do this so far! 😡 ++++
THAT means we need LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF SIGNATURES to let them know that the People of Detroit want our City Officials to CHANGE their anti-people and anti-Detroit attitudes and to SUPPORT our City Charter!
Signatures of registered Detroit voters are preferred for this petition, but are NOT required. THERE IS NO AGE REQUIREMENT - KIDS' SIGNATURES ARE ALSO WELCOME!
AND, please send this petition to our elected Council Members and ask them to bring this simple but very important People's request in front of City Council for their vote. Their contact info can be difficult to find on the City's website. Here's a decent link: https://corktownconnection.org/1249-detroit-city-council-contact-info-2024
THANK YOU for signing and sharing this petition, and for helping to make POSITIVE CHANGE for our great City of Detroit.
