Let's overcome the loneliness epidemic and get people to connect more.

Let's overcome the loneliness epidemic and get people to connect more.
The Issue
Declare February 1st as the International Day of Connection and Overcoming Loneliness!
Loneliness has emerged as a silent epidemic, affecting millions and undermining the health of individuals and communities.
In response, we are calling for the establishment of February 1st as the International Day of Connection and Beating Loneliness, a day dedicated to fostering face-to-face connections and encouraging people to step away from digital screens, engage with their surroundings, and enrich their social lives.
Why is this important?
Research consistently shows that loneliness not only affects mental health but can be as detrimental to our lifespan as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It decreases the quality of life and increases the risk of various physical and psychological conditions. Loneliness affects both the young and the old alike.
By establishing a day dedicated to overcoming loneliness, we can:
Encourage Community Participation: Promote activities that require personal interaction, encouraging people to say hello to a stranger or check in on someone.
Promote Digital Detox: Dedicate this day to reducing screen time, thereby increasing face-to-face interactions.
Foster Friendships: Make it easier for people to introduce themselves and meet new friends by wearing a pink sticker with their name.
What do we want?
We urge governments to officially recognize February 1st as the International Day of Connection to Overcome Loneliness. This day will serve as a reminder of the importance of community, the value of direct human contact, and the joy that comes from making real-world connections. We ask all levels of government to consider community design and the allocation of "third spaces" that can serve as accessible places for more in-person connections.
