The district of Squamish in British Columbia was involved in an emergency response this past Sunday after an integrel part of its wastewater system failed, causing some sewage to enter a local estuary, surrounding environments, and homes. (Global News, Jan 15/23). The current plant is only a "secondary treatment plant" that does not treat all toxic wastes that can harm marine and other life!
According to the Mayor's Office the forthcoming upgrades will only increase the capacity of the sewage plant for some improvements and accomodate community growth. However, it would remain only a secondardy plant! The highest Tertiary Treatment Level is needed now... cities cannot wait to protect the growing human populations and ecosystems!
