The City of Comox has put our Sewage Pollution Information of January 13th on their Council Meeting Agenda for consideration on Feb 3rd.

The human population growth continues to cause increase sewage. If sewage is not treated with the best technologies now available then there will be added health care costs and decimation of ecosystems. It would be irresponsible to wait up to 20 years until 2040! Now is the time to protect people, endangered species and fragile ecosystems.

Part of Lifeforce  Recommendations:

1. Your four options did not include Tertiary Treatment. All were Secondary with some added treatments. Incredibly Option 1 was for less treatment, such as Primary levels, but eventually was recognized as being a ”Step back in effluent quality”! Details about Tertiary Treatment must be included.

2. Ask the Federal and Provincial for grants to do it now due to increasing human population pollution and future higher costs? Victoria, BC received substantial funding and as stated in our petition in 2019 the City of Powel River received  a total of $55,730,800 in funding for a new wastewater treatment plant.

3. Option 2 Secondary Treatment was picked because it had “the lowest capital and operating costs of three options, ... to be $121 a year per household.” However, Option 4 Secondary with more sewage treatment would only be less than $4 per month more. What are the costs of Tertiary Treatment?

4. Some of the Sewage Committee Members (such as the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce) voted against Secondary Treatment.

5. People must be fully educated in order to protect themselves, animals and ecosystems they care about. Perhaps a Public Referendum will be necessary?

Since the 80s, the Comox Valley, BC sewage pollution has been dumped into the Salish Sea polluting the homes of endangered wildlife such as orcas and all other marine life.  All cities must stop all pollution now to protect present and future generations of both people and wildlife!
