It is great to hear that after decades of polluting the homes of orcas and other marine life, the City of Victoria is admitting that their new Tertiary Treatment Plant is the only way to stop all sewage pollution.
So why is the Comox Valley Sewage Commission stating that they will only “improve” the present Primary system to Secondary Treatment? Their “Four Options” didn’t even advise people that the highest, safest level is Tertiary Treatment. They only called it additional methods. Incredibly their “Option 1” would have been worse than the present Primary Treatment and was eventually removed.
What are the costs for Secondary versus Tertiary? Tertiary Treatment can’t wait for another 20 to 30 years. Time has run out! Sewage dumping would continue to threaten human health, decimate wildlife and pollute fragile ecosystems. Sewage pollution is growing due to human population growth. We must spend the money now to do it right or will have to spend millions more on the increasing human health problems and getting Tertiary Treatment finally built.
Lifeforce continues our campaign to make Tertiary Sewage Treatment the law. Regulatory limits set by Provincial and Federal governments are inadequate and must be improved to ensure that people, animals and the ecosystems are truly protected.
