Hi food waste warriors! Hope you’ve had a good Halloween and Bonfire Night! Did you know that 15 MILLION pumpkins are wasted every year in the UK, both in our homes and in the fields before they even get to us? Check out this video from OLIO: https://www.facebook.com/olioex/videos/1820953131496615 and please cook up those tasty pumpkins, if you have any left over from Halloween! Some news updates from us: The vital vote we have been building to of the European Parliament’s Environment Committee has now been delayed from November 7th until late January 2017. That’s good news as it means we have longer to build a strong movement to tackle Europe’s food waste before the vote. We’re going to use that extra time to get the petition translated into other European languages to roll it out throughout Europe! We’re looking for people to help translate it into Italian, Romanian, Dutch, Hungarian, Greek and Danish. If you can help, please get in touch with me: martin@thisisrubbish.org.uk (We already have volunteers busily translating it into French, German, Spanish, Polish, Finnish, Czech, Portugese, and Swedish!) In case you’d like to read our statement to the European Parliament, Council and Commission – to find out more detail about what we’re calling for – it is now available online here: https://www.foeeurope.org/sites/default/files/materials_and_waste/2016/statement_on_food_waste_in_european_directive_200898ec1.pdf In addition to these 19 organisations, ActionAid International and Slow Food have also since signed up to support the statement! Other organisations are joining all the time. We’re also in talks with some large international businesses to discuss if they might be interested in supporting too, so watch this space! In the meantime, please continue to spread the word about the petition! Keep up the food waste fight! Peace and pumpkins, Martin Bowman
