This is because of the current political situation between Europe and Russia, where the Russian embargo has meant huge surpluses can't find an outlet in Europe. This just highlights the need for more concerted efforts to reduce food waste in Europe! http://www.freshplaza.com/article/165192/Hundreds-of-thousands-of-kilograms-of-top-fruit-ready-for-destruction It's also an unusual situation that's dwarved by the business-as-usual food waste that's generated in industry all over Europe - supermarkets rejecting produce for being the wrong size and shape, for instance, or routine overproduction by farms for fear they will be struck off if they ever undersupply their buyers. We need to design this food waste out of the system in the first place, and redistribute what can't be reduced to charities to feed the hungry!
