Let's Build a Skateway to the Gorge!

Let's Build a Skateway to the Gorge!
The Issue
For many years, I've proudly called Troutdale, Oregon my home. However, as a passionate skateboarder, I'm frustrated by the lack of a dedicated skate park in our community. Since the 1990s, at least, the topic of a skate park has been discussed sporadically, only to eventually be swept under the rug time and time again.
Despite the discussions and expressed need, Troutdale still lacks a proper skate park. Many of us are frustrated by the delays in progress. However, there's a simple, temporary solution that can cater to our immediate needs until a permanent solution is established. We propose that the city allocate funds to transform the tennis court at Reynolds High School, or one or more of the city's underutilized courts, into a temporary skate park. This can be done with relatively minimal financial investment and would provide an immediate haven for countless enthusiasts of skateboarding, biking, scootering, and roller skating.
It's crucial to consider that providing such a facility goes beyond just having a place to ride. I've seen firsthand how vital such spaces are for communities, promoting physical activity, creativity, and camaraderie among people of all ages. This proposal would provide a public space, ensuring safety and visibility and allowing enthusiasts to pursue their passion in a controlled environment. Furthermore, this temporary solution would serve as a stepping stone, keeping the community engaged and excited, while plans for a concrete skate park continue to progress.
Studies have shown that skate parks can significantly reduce crime and antisocial behavior in the neighborhood. Skate parks are known to encourage positive development in youth, promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. In places where parks have been established, the local economy often sees a boost due to increased foot traffic and visitors. By granting us this temporary park, the city of Troutdale could set an example by demonstrating its commitment to fostering a vibrant, active community.
We urge city officials to prioritize this temporary park in the existing court(s). Let's make Troutdale a vibrant hub for action sports and demonstrate that we value the interests of our youth and the community at large. Please sign this petition and support the immediate transformation of the Reynolds High School and/or city courts into a temporary skate park.
