Let Miguel Contreras have an off-season!

The Issue

2025-2026 MC Football

February 4, 2025

To the Athletic Director, Principle of Athletics, LAUSD, and everyone else whom it may concern.

I write this letter as the voice of many. The Administration of Athletics at MC made the decision to cut all off season training. This decision resulted in the resignation of Head Coach Manuel Guevara, Coach Joseph Reyes, Coach Carlos Trujillo, Coach Luis Coto, and Coach Roberto Aguilar. I can confidently say that all players and families from the 2024-2025 season are distraught with this outcome. The time these coaches dedicated to the kids was a key factor in their success last season on and off of the field.

Most of the students last season began their off-season training in January 2024. Even though it was a few days of the month these kids were exposed to the game of football for the first time since there was no football program the years prior. The love for the game was not just that exposure a few times a month, but the love and guidance they received from their coaches. Coach Guevara told a room full of over 70 parents and guardians prior to the season that our kids, even  with little to no experience, were welcomed into his program, because what mattered was the love for the game. He and the rest of the coaching staff trained and conditioned kids who had never touched  a football before with no hesitation. These coaches dedicated their time, energy, and their own money since they were not paid until June. That is half a year of time dedicated by both coaches and students that was done out of the love for the game.  As someone who has a student on the team I can say these 5 coaches showed their love and support on and off the field every single day.

Not allowing these kids to have an offseason gives them such an unfair disadvantage as opposed to the rest of the schools who have the ability to prepare months in advance. These kids need the proper conditioning and training for football. The sport is so physically demanding they need time to be properly trained when it comes to taking hits and preventing life threatening injuries.  The team last season had amazing chemistry not only because of the time they spent together but because of the bonds everyone created. These kids cried, laughed, and most importantly lived for football. This group of coaches did more than teach football, they taught them respect, discipline and made sure their active players maintained amazing  grades.

Last season was very special, a great season thanks to the dedication of these students and amazing coaches. They deserve to have an off season and a fighting chance at putting Miguel Contreras on the map. We have lost the best coaches, kids now want to transfer if they will not be allowed to fully prepare for the sport. This team has the full support of family and parents. And we will continue to show support for our Pico Union boys!
