The Issue

The Silver Lake Recreation Center (SLRC)  is a cherished gathering spot for our community. It's a place where kids can play safely, the community can gather for celebrations, and others play basketball or simply enjoy the outdoors. In an urban environment like Los Angeles, where open and accessible recreational spaces are limited, SLRC stands out as a vital component of our neighborhood. It was a special place, open 7 days a week,  until the sudden Sunday closures began in Spring 2026 with no end date in sight.

For many families, Sunday is one of two days in the week when school aged children are at home and able to partake in community activities and play with their families. It’s a day for connecting, socializing, and enjoying the outdoors. However, the current closure of SLRC on Sundays strips us of this opportunity, leaving a void in our Silver Lake community's social fabric.

Reopening the SLRC on Sundays would not only restore a day of recreation for families and individuals but also support mental and physical health. In our city's own 2025 Park Needs Assessment survey, 97% of  respondents agreed that parks, trails, recreation facilities, etc. improve mental health and reduce stress.

By reopening the SLRC on Sundays, we can ensure our community continues to grow, thrive, and remain connected. We urge the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks to consider the significant impact this decision would have on thousands of residents who depend on SLRC as their community hub and ask our elected officials in CD-13 and the Mayor's office to make the reopening of the SLRC on Sundays a priority.

Please join us in advocating for our beloved SLRC. Sign this petition to express your support for reopening the Silver Lake Recreation Center on Sundays and prioritization of our community well-being and connection.
