In 2009, it was revealed that Hope Haven and Madonna Manor, two orphanages in Marrero, were guilty of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of the children and teens in their care. And, at the same time as the Philadelphia atrocities, where >1000 children were raped and molested by a network of over 300 priests for decades, as the hierarchy knew and covered it up, a child rapist known to the Church in New Orleans was allowed to be a lector at St. Mary Magdalen Church, with access to children and the parishioners being none the wiser. It is long past time to investigate the full threat of the Catholic Church to the children of this city, and to determine how far the actions by the clergy have damaged our people. If we are another Philadelphia or another Lafayette, where $26 million has been paid to victims to date, the people of this Archdiocese have a right to know, and the Church must be held to account for their actions, and must be open with the people.
