#NotMyReb #MakeRebGreatAgain

The Issue

We need the Old Hey Reb back. The new Hey Reb is lost in the obscurity of symbolism.

The new logo took away Hey Reb and hid him behind puzzling symbolism. The Las Vegas sign means nothing to Las Vegas Natives and Locals. We are not tourists. UNLV tradition and culture has nothing to do with the strip and gambling. And that is what the Las Vegas sign represents. We are proud of our Runnin' Rebel sports and Hey Reb is the face of that. He represents everything that UNLV and its community have achieved. Hey Reb is a Las Vegas icon beloved by all who call themselves Rebels.

UNLV athletics takes another step into obscurity by following the misguidings of President Len Jessup. The old Hey Reb was created by a true Rebel in 1982 and ran with us to victory in the biggest blowout in NCAA Championship history. Now Hey Reb is being run out of town. Hey Reb received many honors over the years including: top 12 all-american mascot in 2004, featured in 2 ESPN commercials, and 1 of only 4 mascots  featured on Hulu's documentary, "Behind the Mask." Hey Reb has remained more or less unchanged for decades and is a major part of rebel pride.

Len Jessup destroyed our basketball program, now he's destroying its identity. Hey Reb has received several facelifts over his history, but never a transplant. The new mark removes the branding that has made UNLV stand out on a national level. If UNLV truly feels the need to modernize Hey Reb they should go about doing it without replacing him.
