Legislate a tax deduction for daycare expenses
The Issue
As a working mom with four children, managing day-to-day expenses is a constant struggle. One of the most significant financial burdens I face is the cost of daycare. These expenses are necessary to ensure that while I work to provide for my family, my children are in a safe and nurturing environment. Yet, when tax season arrives, I find little relief, as the existing tax provisions inadequately address the actual costs of childcare.
The current Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit provides some relief, but its limitations prevent it from being a true solution for many families. The credit is capped at a percentage of qualifying expenses, and the maximum allowable expense amounts do not reflect the reality of today’s childcare costs, which can range from $8,000 to $20,000 per year, per child, according to studies by Child Care Aware of America. This leaves families to shoulder the majority of daycare expenses with little support.
To build a robust and equitable tax system that supports working families, we must legislate a tax deduction for daycare expenses that is commensurate with the actual costs incurred by families. This deduction should not be subject to an unrealistically low cap and should be fully refundable, ensuring that all families, regardless of income level, benefit from this crucial financial support.
Incentivizing daycare affordability through tax legislation will not only alleviate financial stress for families but also support a stronger workforce by enabling parents, especially mothers, to maintain employment without being disproportionately penalized by daycare costs.
I urge policymakers to consider the pressing needs of working families and take swift action to adopt a practical and supportive tax policy that accurately reflects the high cost of daycare. Please sign this petition to help bring about necessary legislative change, providing much-needed financial relief to parents everywhere. Together, we can create a fairer tax framework that supports working families and nurtures future generations.
