Legalize the Use of Ebikes on UK Paths and Trails

The Issue

As an ebike rider in Kingston upon Hull, UK, I find myself increasingly challenged to find places where I can legally ride. Like many others nationwide, I'm committed to using my ebike responsibly and with due regard for other trail users. However, the lack of clear, ebike-friendly laws means I often have to travel long distances just to enjoy a ride. It's time for change. With the increasing adoption of electric offroad motorcycles in the UK, it's imperative that our laws keep pace with our habits.

The UK has seen a surge in ebike usage, yet our regulatory approach has not adapted to reflect this shift. Moreover, a tightening of laws surrounding ebikes is happening at a time when their popularity continues to rise. This discrepancy has a detrimental impact on the growing ebike community and can inadvertently result in unnecessary disruptions.

Responsible riders should not be penalised for their choice of transport. Instead, we should be enabled to ride our ebikes in a suitable, respectful manner in designated areas. Changing the law to allow ebikes on paths and trails enriches our communal spaces and benefits the community at large. For the sake of preserving the safety of all trail users, we propose that wearing helmets becomes a compulsory requirement for ebike riders.

Through this petition, I urge our local authorities and policymakers to reconsider the current restrictions. Giving us the freedom to ride can indeed cultivate a better community, reduce conflict and foster positive interactions. We request a revision in ebike laws to reflect their growing importance in our society.

This plea is not just for myself in Kingston upon Hull, but for every ebike rider in the UK who believes in positive change. Let our paths and trails be shared responsibly. Please sign this petition and help us to ride freely and legally in the UK.
