Domestic abuse and husband murders are grim realities in India that we can no longer ignore. A significant number of these tragic cases often stem from conflicts over finances and property between spouses. One practical and preventive solution is the legalization of prenuptial agreements in India.

A prenuptial agreement is a legal contract that outlines how assets and responsibilities will be divided if a marriage ends in divorce. While many countries legally recognize such agreements and have seen a sharp drop in financial disputes and domestic conflicts, India still does not formally accept them.

Legalizing prenuptial agreements could help prevent false domestic abuse claims, reduce property-related murders, and most importantly, allow couples to enter marriage with clarity and transparency about financial expectations. This would especially help men feel safer and more secure in their marriages.

According to the 2025 report from the National Crime Records Bureau, a husband is killed approximately every 10 minutes in India, many times due to dowry or financial disputes. This heartbreaking statistic highlights the urgency of reform.
