The Issue

Ever since I was a child, I dreamed of having a pet raccoon. Their mischievous nature, intelligence, and unique personalities have always fascinated me. However, my dream remains unfulfilled due to the legal restrictions in the state of Georgia that prohibit owning raccoons as pets.

In Georgia, current wildlife laws classify raccoons as wild animals, and owning them without a special permit is illegal. This outdated law overlooks the fact that raccoons can adapt well to domestic life. In many states across the U.S., including Tennessee and Alabama, pet raccoon ownership is allowed with guidelines ensuring that both the owner and the animal are safe and well cared for.

Allowing pet raccoon ownership in Georgia can be beneficial in multiple ways. With proper regulations, raccoon owners can provide loving homes while ensuring the animals receive proper care and attention. This can also help in educating the public about responsible pet ownership and conservation efforts related to raccoons.

We're not asking for an unregulated free-for-all. Instead, we propose a structured approach where potential raccoon owners go through a vetting process to obtain a permit. This could include mandatory training on raccoon care, habitat requirements, and healthcare needs. Veterinary check-ups and proof of appropriate housing for the raccoon would be part of the application process, ensuring only responsible individuals are permitted.

It's time for Georgia to join other states in recognizing responsible pet raccoon ownership. With your support, we can urge the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division to reevaluate and amend current regulations to allow raccoons as domesticated pets under a well-regulated framework.

Please sign this petition to make it possible for raccoon enthusiasts in Georgia, like myself, to finally open our homes and hearts to these captivating creatures. Your support can make a difference in changing outdated perceptions and laws. Thank you for helping us make this dream a reality.
