The Issue

As a child, my mother lovingly cared for a pet raccoon named Marty. This unique pet became a significant part of her identity, bridging the gap between humans and wildlife in a way that typical pets could not. Despite the unconventional nature, Marty was more than simply a pet, but instead a beloved member of our My Mother's Family. Unfortunately, current legislation restricts the legal ownership of raccoons, fraught with penalties that bar individuals like my mother from forming these meaningful relationships.

Raccoons are highly intelligent and adaptable creatures capable of forming deep bonds with their human caregivers, much like domesticated cats and dogs. Regrettably, these endearing creatures are listed as "wild animals" under most state laws making it illegal to keep them as pets. The perception that raccoons are problematic or categorically unfit to be pets is largely based on misconceptions and lack of understanding about their behavior and needs.

We are now asserting our right to redefine what is considered suitable as a pet. With the right educational resources and preventative measures in place such as vaccinations and neutering or anything else to ensure a healthy & happy Little friend. the reported concerns associated with owning a raccoon can be mitigated. With over 30 percent of household in US owning cats and dogs (source: American Pet Products Association), we believe introducing raccoons into this mix can enhance the biodiversity and promote a greater understanding of wildlife within our homes.

This petition aims to change the legal status of raccoons and legalize their ownership as pets. Diversifying pet ownership can strengthen human-animal bonds and diversify our understanding of animal behavior. It's time we give people like my mother the right to choose their companion without legal constraints.

Please sign this petition to demand the legalization of pet racoon ownership. Together we can redefine the beneficial bonds between humans and animals.
