Compassion Cannot Wait: Legalize Medical Marijuana in Kansas

Every day, Kansans living with cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, PTSD, Crohn’s disease, chronic pain, terminal illnesses, and other debilitating medical conditions are forced to suffer while safe, physician-supervised medical cannabis remains unavailable in our state.

Medical marijuana is not about getting high. It is about giving patients another evidence-supported treatment option when traditional medications fail, cause severe side effects, or no longer provide relief. For many patients, medical cannabis can help reduce chronic pain, ease chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, improve appetite, lessen muscle spasms, decrease seizure frequency in certain conditions, and improve quality of life under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Across the United States, many states have recognized the medical value of cannabis by creating regulated programs that allow qualified patients to access it safely. These programs require physician certification, laboratory-tested products, strict licensing, secure dispensing, and patient protections. Kansas patients deserve the same compassionate standard of care.

Every day Kansas delays action has real human consequences:

Cancer patients endure unnecessary pain and nausea.
Veterans living with PTSD struggle to find effective treatment options.
Children with severe seizure disorders may have fewer therapeutic choices.
Patients with chronic illnesses face difficult decisions between untreated symptoms and medications that may carry significant risks or unwanted side effects.
No patient should have to leave Kansas, break the law, or suffer unnecessarily simply because they seek relief under the care of a qualified healthcare provider.

We call on the Kansas Legislature and the Governor to enact comprehensive medical marijuana legislation that:

Allows physicians and other authorized healthcare providers to recommend medical cannabis for qualifying conditions based on their professional judgment.
Creates a secure, state-regulated medical cannabis program with licensed cultivation, manufacturing, testing, and dispensing.
Requires independent laboratory testing, accurate labeling, and quality standards to protect patient safety.
Protects qualified patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and licensed businesses acting in accordance with state law.
Provides affordable access for veterans, seniors, and patients with disabilities or limited incomes.
Supports continued scientific research and ongoing evaluation of patient outcomes.
This is not a request to legalize recreational marijuana.

This is a call to recognize that patients deserve access to every reasonable medical option that may improve their health, reduce suffering, and restore dignity. Decisions about appropriate treatment should be made between patients and their healthcare providers—not determined by outdated policies.

Compassion is not controversial. Science should guide healthcare. Patients deserve choices.
