Legalize Lane Splitting at Low Speeds in Kentucky

The Issue

I am a resident of Kentucky and I have personally experienced the dangers of being stuck in slow-moving traffic. Once, while sitting idle in traffic, I was hit from behind. This accident could have been avoided if lane splitting were legal and practiced safely.

Lane splitting is a practice where motorcyclists ride between lanes of slow-moving or stopped cars. It's currently illegal in Kentucky, but it's time for that to change. In California, where lane splitting is legal under certain conditions, there has been a significant reduction in rear-end collisions involving motorcycles (source: California Highway Patrol). Moreover, according to a study by the University of California Berkeley (2015), motorcyclists who split lanes in heavy traffic are significantly less likely to be struck from behind.

Kentucky should follow suit and allow lane splitting when traffic is moving slower than 55mph. This would not only help reduce motorcycle accidents but also improve overall road safety and ease congestion.

It's time for us to take action - for me, for all motorcyclists who've had similar experiences, and for everyone on the road who benefits from safer driving practices. Please sign this petition urging our lawmakers to legalize safe lane splitting at low speeds in Kentucky.
