Legalize backyard hens in Markham

Legalize backyard hens in Markham
The Issue
I have spent the last five years with my pet chickens, Chestnut and Buttercup, I've discovered the unique joy and companionship they bring into my life. They've been there for me every step of the way, following me around, sharing cuddles, and brightening my days with their sassy personalities and warm presence. These chickens have been more than pets; they are family and have supported me through my toughest times. I wouldn’t be where I am without them and they mean the world to me.
Recently, I was heartbroken when the City of Markham notified me to remove them from my property. This notice impacts not only my life but also the lives of my beloved chickens. It’s difficult to part with animals that have been significant in providing emotional comfort and stability. They were my best friends, I cannot imagine a life without them.
Allowing backyard hens made me realize the way chickens are treated in factory farms. They are often mistreated inhumanely which is completely unacceptable. They deserve proper care, love and attention as they are animals with feelings of pain, sadness and stress.
Chickens can provide various benefits to the residents of Markham. Not only would it foster a sense of sustainability by enabling citizens to locally source fresh eggs, but it would also promote ecological awareness and education for children and urban families. By implementing a straightforward set of regulations and guidelines regarding hen welfare, noise control, and waste management, Markham can strike a balance between maintaining urban civility and acknowledging the growing desire for sustainable living practices.
If cities like Newmarket, Brampton, and Toronto have successfully legalized backyard hens, then it is plausible for us to achieve the same in Markham. We urge the City Council to revisit and update their bylaws to accommodate responsible hen-keeping within our community.
Your support in signing this petition will contribute significantly to our community and make a huge difference for those who hold close bonds with their feathered companions. Please help me keep my chickens and for other chicken owners in Markham. Thank you so much for your time and support.
