Legalize Backyard Chickens for Rochester Residents!

The Issue

Given the state of our nation, access to affordable, healthy food has become a pressing concern not just at a national level, but also directly impacting our local community. I personally feel the crunch, and it's a sentiment shared by many of my neighbors. That's why we believe that a step towards self-sustainability would be to allow modest backyard hen keeping for fresh egg collection.

Backyard hen keeping is more than just an activity; it's a solution. The home-grown eggs are not only fresher, but they are also more nutritious, hosting higher amounts of vitamins A, E, and omega-3 fatty acids compared to their store-bought counterparts (The Poultry Site, 2020).

However, current regulations are obstructing our community's access to this sustainable means of food production. We are not advocating for large-scale poultry farming - just a small flock of hens, which are also proven to be beneficial for the environment as they reduce household waste by converting kitchen scraps into eggs (The Poultry Site, 2020).

Our community deserves the permission to practice this harmless and helpful activity that can help alleviate financial pressures and promote healthier lifestyles locally. We demand a change in the restrictive regulatory rules to allow residents the ability to own small flocks of hens in their own backyards, thereby enabling us to provide for ourselves and depend less on unreliable food supply chains.

We urgently urge lawmakers to review and amend these regulations. Please support us in our fight to secure our right to sustainable and reliable food sources - sign this petition.
