Two years ago I presented this petition to Keith Rowley at the Parliament on the Waterfront. After a year of consultation, the government agreed to decriminalise. It took another six months of pressure and protests to force them to bring the promised legislation to the Parliament. When it finally came, it was so evilly crafted to punish growers and potential competitors to the already registered and branded West Indian Cannabis Company that we gasped at the audacity of the corruption.
People of Trinidad and Tobago who have any sense, it is clear that all kinds of bobol going down to ensure that the legacy growers, the small farmers who have suffered and done jail time for ganja, are shut out of the supply side. Even as trials show that ganja can prevent and treat Covid 19, police continue to burn precious ganja fields. Or they claim to, anyway. You and I know they does thief nuff.
It is clear that decriminalisation is not working. And it will never work. We must legalise and free our people once and for all from the persecution of the police, who seem to love ganja more than us.
If you want to bring an end to the gang wars, the murders, and allow thousands to take part in a sustainable and lucrative industry, sign the petition. Let the government know this is imperative for the economy to recover. And to restore some measure of social justice.
