Island Preservation of Live Oaks

Island Preservation of Live Oaks
The Issue
A Live Oak is under imminent threat at 202 Ocean Boulevard Carolina Beach, NC. The 100+ year-old Live Oak will be destroyed and replaced by a duplex soon.
There is currently no ordinance for trees in Carolina Beach, NC. Property owners have full discretion to do as they please with trees on their lots. The Carolina Beach Planning and Zoning Board is currently working on a tree ordinance. Meanwhile, we are fighting for the preservation of the Live Oak at 202 Ocean Boulevard. A number of communities, from Seattle to Hilton Head, have ordinances for tree protection. The initial fight to get a tree ordinance will be the hardest because property owners have always had the right to clear-cut without consequences. We are asking the Town of Carolina Beach to pass an ordinance for trees, and preserve our Live Oaks.
Unfortunately, the Live Oak at 202 Ocean Boulevard is running out of time and the duplex to be built is already listed for sale. Remember the Ogden Oak? We look to those activists as an example of how to work with the development team and save the Live Oak at 202 Ocean Boulevard. As a community, we value the Live Oaks as a beloved part of our identity and culture. Please support and sign!
