Laurence Brass Must Resign As Chair of Herts Council

Laurence Brass Must Resign As Chair of Herts Council
The Issue
CALL FOR COUNCILLOR LAURENCE BRASS TO RESIGN AS CHAIRMAN OF HERTFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL
💥 The Breaking Point
On 21 October 2025, Hertfordshire County Council crossed a line.
A motion promoted by Peter Segal, founder of St Albans Friends of Palestine and a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, called for the Council to divest from companies linked to Israel.
The BDS movement has fuelled hatred and antisemitism worldwide. That such a motion was even debated in Hertfordshire — the county with the highest percentage of Jewish residents in the UK, home to more than 25,000 Jewish people — was nothing short of disgraceful.
And it happened under the watch of Cllr Laurence Brass, the man meant to uphold fairness and decency as Chairman of the Council.
⚠️ Silencing the Truth
During the debate, Cllr Matthew Hurst warned that the motion could breach equality law, invite judicial review, and tarnish the Council’s reputation.
But before he could finish, Cllr Brass cut him off, silencing one of the few voices defending legality and integrity.
He didn’t stop division; he stopped accountability.
That moment exposed a Chairman more loyal to party politics than to principle.
✡️ The Vote That Shamed Hertfordshire
When the vote came, 37 councillors supported the motion, 36 opposed.
Cllr Brass refused to vote, claiming “impartiality.”
When he announced that the motion had passed, he did so gleefully, appearing proud of the result — a reaction that left many in the chamber and across Hertfordshire’s Jewish community stunned and hurt.
This from a man who spent 40 years with the Board of Deputies of British Jews, including six as Treasurer and Vice-President — someone who should have known better than anyone the pain this would cause.
🚨 Enough Is Enough
Hertfordshire deserves better.
By silencing debate and standing aside as a BDS motion passed by one vote, Cllr Laurence Brass betrayed the community he once represented.
We, the Never Again Now campaign and the people of Hertfordshire, call on him to resign immediately as Chairman of Hertfordshire County Council.
His continued presence disgraces the office and undermines public trust.
🕯 Stand Up. Speak Out.
This isn’t about left or right — it’s about right and wrong.
When a leader betrays his own community, silence is not an option.
Never Again means NOW.
👉 Sign now to demand his resignation and restore integrity to Hertfordshire County Council.
