School year 20-21
School year 20-21
The Issue
We want to send the letter below to help our cause
I am writing again to you to beseech you to advocate for the students of our district. Since Governor Cuomo announced his Reimagine initiative, he has spoken very little about schools. He has continued to take the state in the direction of a “new normal.” That direction lacks any real leadership or guidelines for the future of education. Cuomo has become a master of last minute deals that occur in the middle of the night. If he is not pushed to restart school in September, Cuomo and his new partnership with Bill Gates, will force our children to be educated in a barren and virtual landscape. Bill Gates does not belong in our educational system. His previous education initiatives, most recently common core, have been nothing but detrimental to our students.
Forcing our children into isolation over the past few months has created many unintended consequences on the mental, social, physical and emotional well being of our students. For years, teachers, pediatricians, and childhood experts have warned about the dangers of excessive screen time. This mistake cannot continue. Under Cuomo’s own admittance in April’s daily briefings, he has stated that “in hind sight, closing the schools and locking students down at home was not the best decision.” In late May, he declared that 550 out of the 700 districts in NY state would not have voted to remain closed for the remainder of the school year. We cannot continue to sit idly while our governor continues to take away the in person education of our children.
As parents and community members, we implore you to demand guidelines that are effective, scientific, realistic and consistent with the American Disabilities Act. Our children need to be in school; not for a half day or alternate day, but for the full standard school day. Each child has a different need for why in person education is imperative. Some children require special educational services (speech, OT, PT, etc.), while other students need the social aspect, some rely on meal services, while some need emotional support, or just an environment to thrive and learn outside the confines of their own home.
Some New York districts have actually taken a stance on reopening of their schools. I urge you to do the same. Governor Cuomo must declare the physical classroom is essential. The push for getting back into the school building in the fall will have to come from parents, educators, administrators, community members, board members and elected officials working as a united team. I hope we can work together to make this happen.
