Launch the Northern Hertfordshire Line under TfL

Launch the Northern Hertfordshire Line under TfL

The Issue

Living in North Hertfordshire comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to commuting. As residents of towns like Hitchin or Stevenage, we face exorbitant travel costs just to connect with London. A return journey can set us back over £40, which is a financial strain, especially for families, workers, and students. This makes everyday life burdensome and unfairly penalizes those who live further from the city center.

Introducing the Northern Hertfordshire Line under Transport for London (TfL) is not just a transportation project; it’s a much-needed lifeline for our community. The line would run from King’s Cross St Pancras to Hitchin, with an additional branch to St Albans City. By utilizing existing tracks and stations, this plan is both practical and sustainable.

The current fare disparity is unjustifiable, and it’s time for a change. With fares proposed at just £5 one-way or £10 return for adults, alongside offering completely free travel for all children under 16, families will enjoy significant savings. Such fare adjustments would relieve financial burdens, allowing for more disposable income to support local economies and improve the quality of life for many people.

Moreover, this plan includes outfitting stations with TfL ticket gates, ensuring a seamless integration with the larger TfL network and simplifying travel for everyone. Key stops like Luton Airport would also be covered, making the region more accessible and connected.

As residents of North Hertfordshire, including our own Mayor Sadiq Khan who resides in St Albans, we urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action. This railway line is long overdue. By supporting this initiative, you are not just supporting a train line; you are endorsing a fairer, more connected future for us all.

The stations would include: King’s Cross, Holloway Road, Finsbury Park, Alexandra Palace, Potters  Bar, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Hitchin.
With 2 additional branches going to St Albans and London Luton Airport.
