Yesterday, the Hawaii House Finance Committee voted to DEFER SB2524 SD1 HD1 (requiring CPRs to comply with subdivision or equivalent requirements). Our understanding is the bill will NOT proceed until the 2019 legislative session (at the earliest), except in the unlikely event that the legislature decides to revisit it before the close of session on April 16, 2018. We will continue monitoring the situation closely and will let you know if there are any further developments.
Several of our Maui representatives rose to the occasion despite resistance from the Oahu and Kauai representatives. Senator J. Kalani English, Senator Gilbert Keith-Agaran, Representative Lynn DeCoite, Representative Kyle Yamashita, and Maui County Council-member Don Couch all deserve our thanks and support. In addition, thanks to Josh Stone (Big Wave Realty) and Lawrence Carnicelli (Realtors Association of Maui) for their tireless efforts and everyone else who contributed.
Interested parties should continue to follow the Hawaii legislature regarding this and any future bills that would make the already overregulated CPR process more difficult. Thank you to the 500+ individuals who signed the PETITION! Please continue to share and encourage others to sign it, so that State lawmakers receive a clear message to stop confusing the CPR form of ownership with County regulated subdivisions and County-specific land-use laws.
