MAKE JUNETEENTH A MARYLAND STATE HOLIDAY

The Issue

As many weeks go by I sit and ponder on your press statement where you said Baltimore has set a national example on how to protest with a purpose. I quote “I’m incredibly proud that during this difficult time the people of Baltimore City have set an example for the rest of America” You have yet to acknowledge the purpose is to end systemic racism. This is not just a difficult time for Baltimore City this is a difficult time for all of us but you have yet to declare that you are standing on the side of justice and true equality. We are not only fighting COVID-19 we are fighting to be alive each and every day. The time is right and the time is now.

Governors and corporations across the nation are showing their empathy and support to the African American community’s lives, history and culture by acknowledging Juneteenth as a paid state holiday. As you stand in solidarity, approving Juneteenth as a Maryland State holiday will show true integrity. It will not change the world overnight, however, it is a starting point to break the generations of systemic racism. I look forward to continuously being a part of the conversations and action in any capacity because true inclusion is needed for the full advancement of our nation. We are better together.
