Last week, we sent a letter to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder requesting the voter registration history of LA County Sheriff candidate Jim McDonnell.
While Sheriff McDonnell has admitted to being a registered Republican “in the past,” he has yet to offer any proof that he isn’t still a Republican.
This week, the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder responded to our request with a phone call informing us that Sheriff Jim McDonnell is listed as a “confidential voter.”
This raises a few questions:
Is it even legal for Sheriff McDonnell to have his entire voting record and voter registration information, including party affiliation, confidential?
Why has Sheriff McDonnell taken such great measures to hide his voting record and party affiliation?
We suspect he does not want us to know how conservative he really is. Here's what we know:
- Sheriff McDonnell has met repeatedly with Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
- McDonnell attended a private meeting inside the Oval office with Trump. What did they talk about?
- McDonnell was the #1 opponent of California's historic SB54 limiting law enforcement coordination with the increasingly Gestapo-like ICE.
- The LA Times recently reported McDonnell has engaged in seriously aggressive racial profiling against Latinos.
- McDonnell is the Vice President of the Greater Counties Sheriffs Association a far right wing coalition of Sheriffs.
That is just the tip of the iceberg. What else is Sheriff Jim McDonnell hiding?
We the voters of Los Angeles County deserve to know the truth about the political ideology of our Sheriff. We deserve to know if Sheriff McDonnell is still a Republican and if he’ll support the dangerous and bigoted Trump/GOP law enforcement agenda as Sheriff.
