Last Friday, Minister Stokes released the long-awaited Synthetic Turf Study in Public Open Space.

The report highlighted significant community and environmental issues and concerns in relation to synthetic turf, with the NSW Chief Scientist requested by the minister to further investigate the impacts of synthetic turf and explore alternatives. A key outcome is the development of NSW State Government guidelines in relation to the ongoing development of sporting fields.

Unfortunately, the report does not achieve the urgent and necessary changes that hundreds of people called for in their direct submissions to the inquiry. Most disappointing is the lack of requirement for a DA to be mandatory for every new synthetic installation so that all potential environmental impacts are properly assessed.

Last month, KMC approved another $500,000 investment required to proceed with the project, with the total cost of the synthetic field now likely to exceed $3.5 million.

With council elections approaching and further synthetic fields in the pipeline, now is the time to ask your councillors and candidates about their position on the proliferation of synthetic ovals within the LGA. Approach your local candidates and ask them what they intend to do if elected.
