On June 7th, 2020 I went into my shift at one of the biggest corporations/grocery chains in the world wearing my new favorite mask with the printed words “Black Lives Matter.” Not even a full hour into my shift, I was pulled aside by my manager who said that our company isn’t okay with me wearing this because they consider it a “political statement.” There’s nothing said about that in the most recent employee uniform handbook (it has not been updated since before Covid-19 became an issue around Thurston County). I’ve been pulled aside by management four times regarding my BLM mask as of today, June 9th, 2020. I find that to be extremely hypocritical, considering Kroger posted publicly & sent out a letter to all of their associates stating: “we are creating more opportunities for you to openly share your thoughts, feelings and experiences with discrimination-“ “we encourage our leaders to listen to your teams,” “we will continue to educate and show our leaders and associates how to be stronger allies-“ “we strive to be a company where our associates feel empowered and supported.” “We not only have to listen, but we must act.” Kroger, I hope you decide to stop aiding oppression & support us in our desire to raise awareness for a cause that is NOT political, but a statement of truth. To argue against this statement is to argue in favor of the death of our black brothers and sisters, everywhere.
