Anyone following the petition may have noticed that, for the past week or so, the pace of people signing has slowed. I have mentioned this before and suggested ways it may be picked up again. At the same time, actions have a rhythm and, after a sprint, the pace often lessens for a time, allowing many to catch their breaths!
A prominent question in this entire effort is this: is sexual abuse of children in our institutions by faculty or staff ACCEPTABLE? Has it always been? If so, has nothing changed?                              When I was in school, limited and rather random corporal punishment was tolerated. I had a seventh grade teacher, geography I believe, who used what I would now call, positional torture, to punish kids for various minor infractions of his rules. For instance, we would have to sit bent over our desks, the tip of our noses barely touching a piece of paper. He would walk by, as our necks and shoulders began to ache, and slide the paper a bit to see if we were touching it but not resting on it. The position became intolerable after a time. He had humiliation punishments as well. If we were caught chewing gum we would be forced to take it out and press it onto our noses and wear it throughout the day, although we had him for one class. If he saw us in the halls without gum on our noses...further punishment would follow. Just an example.
Sexual abuse is on a different level. The child is affected by this for life. The perpetrator, particularly if he or she is allowed to remain in their jobs, may go on to abuse twenty to 100 other students during their years at a school on average. We are well aware of the Catholic Church revelations over the years thanks to the brave survivors who weathered the resistance and summoned the courage necessary to put themselves emotionally back on the chopping block of denial and victim blaming and ridicule. Similar things happen in other churches as well. The Boy Scouts have their "scandal," famous children's camps have been found out to have systemic sexual abuse going on and we are lately listening to revelations from our Olympic gymnasts as they talk about sustained sexual abuses by a trusted doctor and the enormous difficulty of stopping him and getting justice in our system.
So to say that, "Yes, systemic sexual abuse of children by various teachers or authorities in institutions, children's programs, sports teams, religious settings IS acceptable to our culture!" The proof is the prevalence of the scope and scale of this abuse of children and the reactions by our system of law enforcement, justice system and by the community itself, reactions that are far from preventative or punitive. Perpetrators continue for years because this is ACCEPTABLE, TOLERABLE, because the educational institutions prioritize face over children's lives, because our religious institutions do the same, and because the community prefers to look the other way, to not want this "dirty laundry" aired before others.
The undersigned say "NO! Sexual abuse of children, our children or anyone's children in our institutions is WRONG! We will not TOLERATE this! We will not accept the NORMALIZATION of hundreds or thousands of children being sexually abused in our school, or even of ten or five or one!"

Sign if you agree. Share if you agree. Unfortunately but truthfully, the district WILL NOT do what it takes to eradicate this abuse. You and I must and we must find more to stand with us against this systemic abuse!

Thank you!
