US Gymnasts and systemic abuse, an unfortunate example from which all can learn.

Hi friends, 

As most of you are aware, the US women's gymnasts are getting a lot of media focus at the moment both for the story of the systemic abuse in their sport but also for the way in which their requests as survivors of that abuse were mishandled by all above them or in position to do something to intervene, investigate and protect them...to eradicate the abuse. 
Listening to their testimony online is an excellent way for non-survivors to come to understand what survivors of systemic sexual abuse face when trying to get help, to report abuse, to be protected, to stop ongoing abuse and to seek justice. Their testimonies are very similar to what I have heard as an ally to survivors at KHS. The only difference is the particular institutions that failed to help them including the FBI. 
It is a great shame and a glaring fact that sexual abuse is institutionalized and therefore normalized in our society. While this is nothing new, undoubtedly, that fact only increases the scale and sustain of this horrible truth. Children, girls and boys, as well as young people who are students or athletes and are entrusted into the hands of teachers, coaches, teams, etc. by their parents, young people over 18, as well, who are part of often very highly regarded organizations, are routinely violated by predators and it is very difficult to get the public angry about this fact let alone to get legal protection and justice. 
Bearing in mind what you see on the news or research about the gymnasts, please connect it to what you have heard has happened in Kirkwood...for 50 years, and to what is happening now...an apparent effort to circle the wagons on the part of the district, to protect the name of the school and community, etc. Please sustain your motivation to assist as you can, to attend school board meetings if possible, to voice your opinions to those in power, and to assist this petition to circulate and gain numbers. It is being seen. It is being noticed. I assure you. 

Let's continue to help stop sexual abuse in the Kirkwood District.
