As you probably noticed we broke through 1000 Monday! Such a great start for the petition! We are very grateful for every signature!
As we move along in many actions and with many tools and tactics some things become more evident and are worth commenting on. Among these is the fact of the Grey Zone, to give it a term.
Those of us very motivated and passionate about protecting children at KHS, our central focus, are obviously active and outspoken on that side of the issue. Opposite us are persons who for a variety of reasons want us to be silent, to go away, see us as attacking their school, their community...things their lives are founded upon.
At this point, perhaps, there are as many people adamantly opposed to hearing about systemic abuse at KHS and having it investigated further, as there are people trying to raise consciousness, to tell the truth, blow the whistles and to support the survivors. Give or take.
Between these more active groups, positive and negative, is this "grey zone." Undoubtedly the people in the grey zone outnumber either the pro's or con's here relative to more rigorous action needed from the district to safeguard the children and to eradicate the sexual abuse. In this grey zone are many good people who, so far, may well be listening, may have points of view, may want to see something more done, etc., but who, for one reason or another, have not spoken up about this nor taken any action so far.
It is as unlikely that we will change the opinion of the opponents of more investigation, more transparency, more support for survivors, more answers from the principals involved as it is that they will change our minds! I think we can pretty much forget about converting the naysayers, those who hold that any criticism of the school is somehow an attack on it, etc. Where we CAN make a difference is by appealing to the group in the grey zone, by assuring them that we are not attacking the community, nor the district, nor people but are acting to protect children from ongoing sexual predation. Yes, to do that we want the 30 predators held accountable (two have died but the truth about them should be out as well.) Yes, to do that we must be assured that any of the remaining 28 are not working for the school or district. But this is not an attack against it is an action for the protection of children.
We are not radicals trying to drag something down. The people on this petition are acting to make this school better, safer, to rid it of what HAS been a horrible attack on its students as well as on the school by numerous sexual predators.
Let's find ways to get this across to the people in the middle. It is the truth, it is not a ploy nor a tactic. Truth is attractive, it is an attractive force. It is its own defense. There is no need to argue with people who will never even meet us halfway. It is a waste of time and a distraction. Time spent going back and forth with the opposers is time that might have been spent attracting the people from the middle zone.
Congrats again for blowing through this first ceiling of 1000 signatures! If you and I can affect one person this month with the truth of this issue and the necessity for community members to act, even in signing this petition, we will have more than 2000 signatures in the next 30 days! 4000 in the following 30 days. Each one, attract one!
