To sign or not to sign?

As of 8/29/21, 569 people have signed to take action relative to protecting the children of Kirkwood School district, in MO, from systemic sexual abuse by faculty and staff at this school. Verified by an independent investigation to have spanned 50 years so far and involved 30 perpetrators, thousands of students were abused. Nothing, so far, guarantees that persons known as have committed or been reported for sexual abuse of children are not working for the schools at this time!
What may seem like a no-brainer question for most of us, to sign or not to sign, apparently is for many. Particularly for those who attended and love this school, having had no bad experiences nor having heard about them going on when they were in school, learning that beneath the surface extensive sexual abuse of minors was going on and was covered up, is a hard fact to deal with. But as it has been verified, not only by survivors (whose testimonies should be enough) but by an independent investigation hired by the school itself....FACT IT IS.
The knee jerk reaction is defense of the school and the larger community of which it is the heart. We want to defend against the bad guy or bad guys, the invasive force. The mistake is to react to survivors and truth tellers who bring the destruction into the public light. Survivors are NOT the problem, they are NOT the foe, they are NOT attacking the school nor its reputation! The persons who are culpable for destruction walked on the children, used them, abused them with zero regard to those children's lives or reputation, with zero regard to the school's reputation and with zero regard to Kirkwood's reputation as a whole. The perpetrators and ALL who shielded them, hid the truth, tolerated it, denied it ARE THE BAD GUYS and we will see that THEY are held accountable.
The district has done nothing and said nothing about holding anyone accountable. It has said nothing. The district doesn't talk about survivors let alone apologizing to them, reaching out to them or assisting them in their pursuit of justice. The district does not even assure us that no current faculty or staff, including the current principal who was named to the investigators by numerous survivors as a sexual abuser, is on the list of 30 perpetrators named by that investigation. The current principal has not denied that he is among the named.
As such is the case, more and more of us see that pressure must be exerted by the community, by alumni, by students as well, to cause the district to do the right thing now and end this systemic sexual abuse. So: to sign or not to sign? This is the question for each of us. I hope we answer it in a manner that prioritizes the safety of the children.
Please share. Together will pass 600 signatures today and will be well on the way to 700! United, we are a force.
