Do you know Petfinder, the largest online, searchable database of animals who need homes from animal shelters and adoption organizations across Canada, the U.S and Mexico ?

Did you know that Kijiji was proud to say that they support promoting the free adoption of animals from shelters and rescue organizations on Kijiji because of its partneship with Petfinder ?

Well, Petfinder no longer partner with Kijiji.

RBC Royal Bank, National Bank of Canada, Toyota Canada, WestJet, Tangerine Bank, and the shopping website zulily all stopped advertising on Kijiji Canada pets’ pages. Secondhand marketplaces such as Used.ca, BuySellTrade.ca, OfferUp, letgoCanada and Craigslist do not allow profiting from the commercial sale of animals on their sites. And 31 organizations, including the Humane Society International – Canada, the Winnipeg Humane Society, the Montreal SPCA, Zoocheck Canada, and the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, a national organization representing 46 humane societies and SPCAs in Canada, all support this petition. And now Petfinder is out too.

Puppy mills and unethical breeders may continue to exist even if Kijiji Canada stops the commercial sale of animals on its site, but at least Kijiji would not give them the perfect platform to thrive on.
