This Valentine's Day, there is only love for the animal protection policies of Used.ca, OfferUp, BuySellTrade.ca, letgoCanada, Craigslist and Facebook. Not so much for Kijiji. Secondhand marketplaces such as Used.ca, OfferUp, BuySellTrade.ca, letgoCanada, Craigslist and Facebook do not allow profiting from the commercial sale of animals on their sites. As the top classifieds site in Canada, Kijiji should set an example and exclude breeders from selling animals on its website, sending the message that animals should not be sold as just another item via classified ads. Puppy mills and unethical breeders may continue to exist even if Kijiji Canada stops the commercial sale of animals on its site, but at least Kijiji would not give them an easy platform to thrive on. Too many people are misled by unethical animal breeders on Kijiji and too many animals with health problems, often because of the conditions under which they are raised and bred, are sold on this site. Is it worth spending this amount of time and resources to scrutinize ads, as well as receiving all the bad press, when Kijiji could be instead spending it to bring together healthy pets with families and shelters who want to give them loving homes?
