Move Kentucky to Open Primary Voting

The Issue

Kentucky is one of only 15 states that still has closed primaries. Voting for our government officials, for president, for our congresspersons, for our senators, for our mayors and metro councilpersons, is our right and duty as citizens of a democratic society.

In order to promote voter participation in a state and a country with historically low voter turnouts, we must allow nonpartisan, independent and third-party voters to participate in all primary elections. We must allow moderates to have the freedom to vote for a candidate in any party. We need free, fair elections that let everyone registered to vote be allowed to vote for one candidate in each year's primary, regardless of committed party affiliation. And most of all, we need to eliminate these tedious deadlines for registration and for switching parties.

As a citizen below the age of 40, I am a member of the demographic that has the lowest rate of voter turnout. My age group should have easily accessible, open and fair elections to promote our participation in the political system and begin to get this country back on track to representing the people, not the interests of the powerful and few.

I created this petition because I want to present a lump sum of signatures to the Kentucky Board of Elections, Matt Bevin, Mitch McConnell and other lawmakers/entities showing them that the citizens of Kentucky demand open primaries so we can get our state on track for election reform and justice for all voters of every party, affiliated and unaffiliated. Please sign this petition to show your support!

PLEASE NOTE THAT MY GOAL IS GOING TO BE IN THE TENS OF THOUSANDS. Change.org automatically sets the petition's goals and will increase gradually as more and more people sign. THANK YOU!
