Withdraw the IUPAT endorsement of Hillary Clinton for the Presidential Nomination
The Issue
The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades officially endorsed Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. There are several reasons why this is unbelievable, but here are the top three:
1) As the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades continues to recover from the 2008 recession, we need to acknowledge that many of the members of the IUPAT fell on hard times during those years and are still in the process of recovering. We also need to acknowledge that the recession was caused not because of the working class but because of the top 1%, Wall Street. The International should not make a unilateral decision to back a candidate that has a track record of having received campaign contributions from Wall Street.
2) Hillary initially agreed with the TPP ( transpacific partnership trade deal) which has been regarded as bad for workers and a corporate power by many economists and journalists. "The TPP repeats many of NAFTA's mistakes, as well as those of other bilateral trade treaties, like the Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China, which cost some 2.7 million U.S. jobs, and the Korea Free Trade Agreement, which failed to deliver the 70,000 jobs its brokers promised. The Economic Policy Institute estimates that under the TPP we stand to lose more than 130,000 jobs to Vietnam and Japan alone, with American workers having to compete with their counterparts in Vietnam, where the minimum wage is just 56 cents an hour. It's not just jobs and trade deficits, however. The TPP also threatens Internet freedoms and civil liberties, collective bargaining rights, public and environmental health, food safety, financial stability--and American democracy. The closed-door nature of the negotiation process has positioned Congress and the American people as passive recipients of public policy, rather than agents of it - and left us out of decision-making processes that will have broad and deep implications in our everyday lives. Meanwhile, 500-plus corporations have been seated at the TPP negotiation table from the start." From a huffington post article dated 2/3/15
3) Hillary Clinton is the democratic parties political equivalent of Mitt Romney. She has constantly changed her personal opinions about issues close to the working class. Recently she has basically copied one candidates platform as his polling number matched or beat hers in key states. This is someone who will do whatever is necessary to win and not necessarily what's right for Americas workforce.
There are stronger labor candidates in the race.
Please sign the petition below to demand that General President Kenneth Rigmaiden and the rest of the General Executive Board withdraw their endorsement of Hillary Clinton who's corporate policies would be detrimental to our growth and our members futures.
